The role of startups has evolved in the strategy of large corporations. Today, startups are central to the growth strategy of many large corporations. But it wasn’t always like this. In this article, I'll outline three ways the relationship between corporations and startups has evolved with shifts in mindset, engagement models and outcomes for corporations.

 

1. "We are big; we know it all."

This is the mindset that arises when leaders in large corporations come to believe they have the resources to drive the necessary innovation in business models, technology and distribution. This approach was once thought to be a self-fulfilling prophecy. "When we have large teams focused on innovation, we are in the best position to drive the innovation." This mindset depicts an inward-facing focus with minimal engagement with any startups.
